September 9, 2025: Two hundred and forty-nine years ago, on September 9, 1776, the Continental Congress officially made “United States of America” the name of the nation. Prior to this change, the term “United Colonies” was used. The name change was important as it showed a change in the way Americans viewed themselves. Changing from colonies to states cemented the idea that this was, in fact, a new nation.
