December 6, 2017: Seventy-one percent (71%) of Americans favor either major changes to or outright repeal of the Affordable Care Act.[1] Twenty-one percent (21%) want it left unchanged. The law is frequently referred to as Obamacare, but Gallup did not use that term when measuring support for the law.
The limited support for the status quo helps explain the ongoing debates in Congress over this law. The 71% who want major changes include 29% who want the law repealed, 28% who approve of the law but favor significant changes, and 14% who disapprove but prefer major changes to a complete repeal.
Gallup notes that these figures mean that the top choice for 42% of Americans is to keep the law but make significant changes. Twenty-nine percent (29%) say Congress should repeal it and start over again, while 21% prefer the status quo.
Earlier Numbers of the Day have noted that 15 million Americans would opt out of Obamacare coverage if they could. An additional 6.5 million paid a fine rather than signing up.
Hospitals experienced significant revenue growth during the first two years of Obamacare.
Part of the frustration with healthcare is driven by the fact that the average doctor visit requires 101 minutes in the waiting room and traveling to see a doctor.
One possible option is a single-payer health insurance plan run by the government. Thirty-three percent (33%) of Americans support a single-payer healthcare plan.
