February 10, 2023: The population of southern states grew by 1.3 million last year. This is in contrast to growth of just 153,000 in western states, a decline of 219,000 in the Northeast, and a drop of 49,000 in the Midwest. The shift is due to a combination of factors including birth and death rates, immigration, and domestic migration.
California, the most populous U.S. state, saw its population drop by 113,000 in 2022, whileTexas, the second most populous state, had an increase in population of more than 400,000.[1]
