February 6, 2025: Two hundred and forty-seven (247) years ago today, on February 6, 1778, the United States and France signed the Treaty of Alliance and a Treaty of Amity and Commerce. These treaties, commissioned by Benjamin Franklin, Arthur Lee, and Silas Deane, chartered an official alliance through military supplies and trade, between the United States and France. Through these treaties, France also recognized the United States as an independent nation. This alliance was crucial to the United States in winning the war, and securing our founding ideals of freedom, equality, and self-governance. [1]
