July 2, 2024: There are 52 state courts of last resort in the United States. These are usually known as the state Supreme Court, though in the state of New York, the highest court is the New York Court of Appeals.
Each state has at least one court of last resort. Oklahoma and Texas each have two— one for civil appeals and one for criminal appeals.
