June 19, 2018: The average millennial expects to retire at age 56. A TD Ameritrade survey found that the average millennial male expects to retire at 53. For millennial females, that figure is 59.[1]

However, 28% of millennials don’t expect to retire at all.

The following list shows the average age at which millennials expect to achieve other life milestones:

  • First career job: 25
  • Move in with a serious partner: 26
  • Marriage: 28
  • First child: 28
  • Purchase a house: 30
  • Pay off student loans: 31
  • Begin saving for retirement: 36

Twenty-five percent (25%) don’t ever expect to marry, and 30% don’t expect to have children.

Twenty percent (20%) don’t think they’ll ever pay off student loans, and 24% don’t expect to purchase a home.

For purposes of this study, millennials were defined as those currently 21-37 years old.
