June 9, 2022: Twenty-seven percent (27%) of voters say background checks for all gun purchases would do the most to reduce mass shootings and gun violence. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 22% say major programs to address underlying mental health issues would do the most, while 19% think that allowing trained teachers to be armed would be the most effective approach.

Others selected placing armed security guards at public schools (12%), banning assault weapons (9%), and banning private ownership of guns (6%).

The survey also found that just 36% of voters favor a proposal that would prevent private citizens from owning guns and allow only law enforcement officials and government agents to own them. Fifty-eight percent (58%) oppose such a proposal. Those numbers include 19% who strongly favor the proposal and 42% who strongly oppose.

Methodology

The survey of 1,200 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on May 26-29, 2022. Fieldwork for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 2.8 percentage points.
