March 16, 2020: The Wall Street Journal reports that $2 billion was spent last year on technologies involving facial recognition. Citing data from research firm Omdia, WSJ notes the market could grow to reach $14.5 billion within 5 years.[1]
However, use of the technology is controversial in some areas. The paper also reports that “seven U.S. municipalities last year banned facial-recognition use by the government, and more are considering doing so this year.”[2] Additionally, the ACLU has filed a lawsuit demanding that federal agencies provide more information about their use of the technology.
Last year, the Department of Homeland Security reported to Congress that it had already processed 20 million passengers using the technology.[2]
