March 4, 2020: The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) estimates that 6,590 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle accidents during 2019. That’s a dramatic 60% increase from a decade ago. In 2009, there were 4,109 pedestrian deaths.[1]

The report notes that pedestrian victims represented 17% of all deaths from motor vehicle accidents in 2018. That’s the highest percentage since 1982.[1]

Five states—Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, and Texas—accounted for almost half (47%) of all pedestrian deaths.[1]

Each weekday, Scott Rasmussen’s Number of the Day explores interesting and newsworthy topics at the intersection of culture, politics, and technology.
