March 5, 2018: The U.S. imports more steel from Canada than from any other nation, a total of 5.7 million metric tons. Brazil is second, shipping us 4.7 million metric tons.[1]

These relationships will all be impacted by President Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tariff on imported steel. The president’s decision fulfilled a campaign promise but was strongly opposed by many of his economic advisors.[2]

Critics of Trump’s plan say it will increase prices for Americans on a wide variety of steel products. Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) called it a “massive tax increase on American families.” However, Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) said the move was “long overdue.”[2] Brown is one of 10 Democrats running for re-election this year in states won by Trump in 2016.
