March 6, 2023: Fifty-nine percent (59%) of voters say we need more individual freedom in the United States today. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that just 23% say we need more government control to maintain social order.

The survey also found that, when asked about specific freedoms, 86% say that freedom of speech is very important. Seventy-nine percent (79%) rate freedom of religion as very important, and 68% say that freedom of the press is. Half (50%) say the same of the right to bear arms.

Methodology

The survey of 1,000 Registered Voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on February 21-22, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of Registered Voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
