May 2, 2023: Two-thirds (66%) of voters prefer a gas-powered vehicle over a comparable electric one that uses no gas but costs $10,000 more. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 23% prefer the electric vehicle. Among those who currently own an electric vehicle, 55% say they would prefer the electric one. Every other demographic group prefers the gas-powered vehicle.

The survey also found that 59% of voters oppose regulations that would effectively outlaw gas powered cars. Forty-seven percent (47%) say that, if half of all new cars sold are electric within the next seven years, the U.S. power grid will not be able to keep up.

Methodology

The survey of 1,000 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on April 20-21, 2023. Field work for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 3.1 percentage points.
