May 8, 2023: Forty-three years ago, on May 8, 1980, the World Health Organization declared smallpox eradicated worldwide. This followed an intensive vaccination effort between 1967 and 1979 that cost around $300 million.
There is evidence of the disease going back 3,500 years, and it had caused widespread death, disfigurement, and blindness worldwide. It is the only human disease to be completely eradicated.[1]
