November 10, 2020: Thirteen (13) Republican U.S. senators were Senate colleagues of President-elect Joe Biden for varying lengths of time. That includes more than 20 years of shared Senate time between Biden and Republican leader Mitch McConnell. The president-elect also served more than a decade with Maine’s Susan Collins. These personal relationships may play an especially important role if the Republicans retain control of the U.S. Senate following run-off elections in January.

The 13 Republicans who served with Biden include Richard Shelby (Ala.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Mike Crapo (Idaho), Chuck Grassley (Iowa), Mitch McConnell (Ky.), Susan Collins (Maine), Roger Wicker (Miss.), Richard Burr (N.C.), Jim Inhofe (Okla.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), John Thune (S.D.), John Cornyn (Texas), and John Barrasso (Wyo.).

Three current Republican senators—Pat Roberts (Kan.), Mike Enzi (Wyo.), and Lamar Alexander (Tenn.)—served with Biden but did not run for re-election in 2020.
