November 10, 2023: Of the 39 states that allow for the recall of elected officials at some level of government, 23 states allow for the recall of school board members.

Six of those states require specific grounds to be met in order for a recall effort to move forward. All 23 require signatures to be collected, though the number required varies by state. In 22 of the 23, if enough signatures are collected, then a recall is placed on the ballot. In Virginia, however, if sufficient signatures are collected, a trial is held at the circuit court level.
