November 13, 2020: The Constitution of the United States was signed by 39 men on September 17, 1787.[1]
That event came 11 years after the U.S. declared its independence and four years after the British signed a peace treaty ending the War for Independence. It would take another nine months before the Constitution was formally approved and ratified by nine states.[1]
George Washington presided over the Federal Convention and was among those who signed the document. So did another future president, James Madison, and colonial legend Ben Franklin.[1]
Three delegates refused to sign the document—Elbridge Gerry of Massachusetts, George Mason of Virginia, and Edmund Randolph of Virginia. Early in the convention, Randolph submitted his own plan for scrapping the existing government and creating something entirely new. That plan—known as the Virginia Plan—was rejected.[1]
Thomas Jefferson, the man who drafted the Declaration of Independence, was not among the signers of the Constitution. But his rival Alexander Hamilton did sign.[1]
