November 28, 2017: For the first time ever, a majority of Americans (55%) have no preference as to whether they have a male or a female boss. Gallup also found that 23% would prefer a male boss and 21% would prefer a female boss.[1]
This is a pretty dramatic difference from 1953 when Gallup first asked the question. At that time, 66% preferred a male boss, 5% preferred a female, and 25% said it didn’t matter.
Three years ago, 46% said they had no preference, 33% preferred a male boss, and 20% preferred a female boss.
Among women, 44% now have no preference, 28% prefer a male boss, and 28% prefer a female. Just three years ago, a plurality of women (39%) preferred a male boss.
