November 9, 2023: Thirty-four years ago, on November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall began to fall. At midnight that day, the Communist Party in East Berlin began to allow citizens to cross into West Berlin. Crowds swarmed the wall, and many began to chip away at the wall with hammers and picks. More than two million East Berliners visited West Berlin that weekend, and cranes and bulldozers began to tear down larger sections of the wall, which had divided the city since 1961.[1]
Germany achieved full reunification almost a year later, on October 3, 1990.[1]
