September 12, 2024: Twenty states allow gubernatorial recalls. Of these 20 states, seven use a form of simultaneous recall, where either the recall question and candidate choice are separate ballot questions or candidates run directly against the governor in the recall election.
The seven states that have this simultaneous recall are California, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The last time a state officeholder was brought up in a recall was in 2021. In this recall, the Governor of California, Gavin Newsom (D), was retained with results 62%-38%.
