September 26, 2018: Two million Americans have severe heart failure and may not have long to live.[1] But results of a new study suggest that a new technology might sharply reduce the death rate for such patients.[2]

The study involved 614 patients with severe heart failure. Half received standard medical care while the other half received a MitraClip device “to repair the mitral valve by clipping its two flaps together in the middle.”

Among those who received standard medical treatment, half were hospitalized within two years and around 20% died. Among those who received the MitraClip, roughly 30% were hospitalized and fewer than 10% died.

The New York Times quoted Dr. Mathew Williams, director of the heart valve program at NYU Langone Health, as saying, “This is a game changer. This is massive.”

The device costs about $30,000.
