Candidate Connection

Scottie Powell participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 9, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Scottie Powell's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Job Growth

2) Improved Infrastructure
3) Fight the opioid epidemic[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am Pro-Life, Pro 2nd Amendment, and I will fight to protect religious freedom. I will work hard to drive job growth and investment to Southern Ohio. I am passionate about making government work better for the citizens. As a former Director of Customer Experience for a state agency I know first hand how broken government is, and I have the proven skill set to fix it. I have created jobs in this community, saved jobs in this community, and eliminated millions in government waste and I want to use that skill set to improve this community I love.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Scottie Powell answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

I think it is important for elected officials to have a strong moral compass. They need to be truthful and full of integrity. Ultimately their singular focus should be on enhancing the lives of their constituents.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a problem solver. I have saved jobs in this community, created jobs in this community, and eliminated millions in government waste because I have a unique ability to understand the root cause of issues and the skill set to fix them.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The core responsibility is to represent the people that elected you and to not serve your own self interest.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I want my kids to be able to say that their dad made our community a better place to live and raise a family. I want to be known as a great dad, caring husband, kind friend, and most importantly a follower of Jesus Christ.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I remember some of desert storm, but the most historical was 9/11. I was a senior in high school. I remember watching in confusion and anger as the towers fell. This was the first time I really remember paying attention to the news and the world around us. I don't think I slept much for several days as I was glued to the TV for any updates. What sticks most in my mind is how the country came together in the days, weeks, and months that followed. You could truly feel the sense of patriotism in this country. We need to work at getting people back to the level of respect and love we witnessed for our first responders, military, and ultimately this wonderful country during the days that followed that terrible event.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
At the age of 8 or 9 I remember mom picking us up from school to hand hoe acres of tobacco that we grew for extra money. We raised tobacco for several years until it was no longer as profitable due to government subsidies.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Being born in October, I'm instantly drawn to Halloween. I love the fall weather and the changing of the trees. Now as a father, I enjoy seeing my children all dressed up and getting excited about Trick-or-Treating.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Bible. It is the road map for my life.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My caring wife and two beautiful kids. Without them I would just be surrounded with meaningless stuff. They are the source of my joy and make my house a home.[3]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
No. Even though I've worked in government I think it is more important to have a strong understanding and experience base in the private sector.[3]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Yes. A single legislator with a great idea is rendered useless if they can't pass a bill. You have to have relationships on both sides of the aisle to pass meaningful legislation.[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office (for example, the U.S. Congress or governor) in the future?
Not at this point. My focus is to be the best Representative for the 90th district that I can be.[3]
