In 2015, three secretary of state seats were up for election:

Party breakdown

There were 27 Republican secretaries of state, 19 Democratic secretaries of state and one nonpartisan secretary of state heading into the 2015 elections.

Just as the nationwide partisan balance of secretaries of state favors Republicans, two of the three secretary of state positions up for election in 2015 were under GOP control. The seats in Louisiana and Mississippi were held by Republicans Tom Schedler and Delbert Hosemann, respectively. The other seat was held by Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes of Kentucky.
