After insisting for months that he would seek re-election in 2016, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) released a video stating that he would not run in 2016 after all.[1]

In the video, where he can be seen with an eye injury he acquired in a January accident, Reid outlines his reasons for retiring in 2016. "We have to make sure that the Democrats take control of the Senate again. And I feel it is inappropriate for me to soak up all those resources on me when I could be devoting those resources to the caucus, and that’s what I intend to do."[2]

Reid also specifically mentions his Republican rival, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). "My friend, Senator McConnell, don’t be too elated. I am going to be here for twenty-two months, and you know what I’m going to be doing? The same thing I’ve done since I first came to the Senate."

Reid was first elected to the Senate in 1986. He took over as the Senate Minority Leader in January 2015, following the 2014 elections. He previously served as Senate Majority Leader from January 2007 to January 2015.[3]
