Beliveau grew up in Rumford, Maine, but left to attend St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Mass., when he was sixteen years old.[2] He then went on to receive a B.A. from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1963.[1]

After graduating, Beliveau began private practice in Rumford with his father and brother and was elected Oxford County Attorney.[4] He served in the Maine House of Representatives when he was 28 years old, and later was elected to the Maine Senate.[5][6]

Beliveau attended the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and in 1969, he succeeded George J. Beliveau is fluent in French, and his political work has extended internationally.
