Born in Honoka'a and raised on Hawai'i Island, Shannon Lopeka Matson, is grateful to call Hawaiian Acres her home. As an alumni of U.H. Hilo, she has been an active community leader in the Hilo and Puna area for over 15 years. Shannon has always been an outspoken advocate for the environment, homeless rights, women's rights, and social justice issues that affect our community. As a mother, small business owner, small farmer, Shannon is aware of the struggles that Hawaii's working families endure to make ends meet. She will work hard to address the inequalities in the systems that continuously lead to benefits for corporations over communities and profits over people.

Shannon knows that listening to our communities' concerns and being a voice for District 3 is the key to co-creating meaningful change for a thriving Hawai'i.

  • People- paid family leave, living wage, reducing regressive taxation
  • Planet- environmental responsibility, green-tax aka tourist-tax to preserve and protect natural areas
  • Prosperity- Diversify our economy, green and tech jobs, increase solutions and support for small farmer, sustainable infrastructure and access to alternative energy -especially in rural areas
Our district is extremely large, with diverse demographics and needs. After spending the last couple of months hearing directly from you I know that there are many different challenges that I would be working to address at the state level. Some common concerns are the lack of infrastructure and poor roads in much of upper Puna and Ka'ū, safety and theft concerns across the district, and financial struggles. My plan for diversification away from a primarily tourism-driven economy would help address some of these concerns. I'd be working for expanding sustainable small-farm agriculture and alternative energy infrastructure technology and jobs to help increase our economic opportunities. Another solution I would be committing to work towards to create more support for our families is Paid Family Leave. This is an important solution to make sure that when a partner needs to take time off to care for aging parents, or a new baby, or for an injured or ill family member that they wouldn't be put in a situation of financial hardship. After becoming a mother, my priorities in life have shifted; I know now that the best way to ensure a better future for my keiki is to run for public office and fight for the representation our district deserves. I am grateful that I've been able to pursue my path in life because of the support of my partner and his willingness to be the parent at home. Let's work together to co-create a thriving Hawai'i for all.
