Shantell Schweikart was a 2016 Democratic candidate for District 45 of the Colorado House of Representatives.

Campaign themes

2016

Schweikart's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Veterans

As a daughter, granddaughter, and sister to veterans, I am strongly committed to serving in the legislature those who serve us by:

  • Connecting the private sector with some of the best talent available
  • Working on both sides of the aisle to ensure uninterrupted care of veterans
  • Continuing to strengthen Colorado’s ties to the rest of the world, and engaging our state with the international community

Education

A few of my education priorities:

  • Education, from early ed through college, should be made affordable to all citizens regardless of where they live.
  • Providing skills to become successful adults
  • Working with teachers to ensure our neighborhood public schools reach their world-class potential
  • Demanding accountability for where our tax dollars are being spent

2nd Amendment

I support our 2nd Amendment rights.

All of our citizens, whether armed or unarmed, have the right to walk down our streets and feel safe. We need meaningful discussion in our state House to:

  • Improve the background checks that 92% of Americans support
  • Increase support for mental health care
  • Develop safety technology and programs

Religious Freedoms

We must protect all our citizens’ freedom of religion and I will fight to defend the right of all faiths to practice openly. Our county has close-knit, dedicated religious communities, that support one another and our Douglas County community as a whole. We all want a better world for our children, and the many faiths represented in our district play a key part in that goal.

Immigration

Our immigration system both on a national and local level is broken and will require bipartisan support to have meaningful change. To make sure all hardworking families are able to reach the American Dream here in Colorado, I will:

  • Work to provide a pathway for hardworking contributors to our economy to do so legally
  • Find solutions to protect our borders, but keep our economies stable[1]
