Campaign themes
2014
Gonzales outlined her plan on her campaign website:
“ | What I Plan to Do: I. Invest in teachers. This is a key strategy for improving teacher retention and stabilizing schools. II. Organize parents. This means two things to me: we have to work with families much earlier. Too many Oakland children start school already behind. We need to make sure families know about all the services they are eligible for, and get enrolled. Parents need to know about the importance of early reading, good nutrition, and that what happens at home matters as much as what happens at school. Also, parents need to know their rights. Parents have a right to be involved in their childrens' education, and we need to invest in their capacity to advocate for their children. Parents who are organized around a shared vision for the quality of education they expect the district to deliver for them will be hard to stop. A key problem in all California schools, but especially in low-income neighborhoods, is resources. Organizing parents is both a short-term strategy to address Oakland's priority schools, as well as a long-term strategy to address the deeper resource issue that we need allied parents to help us fix. III. Shift resources into classrooms and away from central administration.
We need counselors, tutors, social workers, instructional aides, librarians, coaches, and all the other folks who can make sure kids are getting the services they need, not more people who aren't serving kids.[3] |
