Sharing economy
The sharing economy is an economic sector that involves the direct exchange of services between individuals through websites or mobile phone applications.[1] While the sharing economy encompasses many industries, ridesharing and homesharing have attracted the most attention due to larger discussions about housing and transportation in high-population cities. Lyft and Uber are the largest companies in the ridesharing industry, while Airbnb leads in market share among homesharing companies as of July 2017. These companies hire vehicle and property owners as independent contractors in exchange for fees as a percentage of each transaction recorded through their applications.
Usage
Ballotpedia does not put quotation marks around the term sharing economy, despite the recommendation made by the Associated Press Style Book. This usage stems from concerns over the use of scare quotes or quotes implying a particular viewpoint or judgment on the quoted term or phrase.[2]
