My work to protect the environment dates to my youth in Washington State. I traveled and camped with my family to State and National parks in the west every summer. That was when I began to appreciate the magic of immersing myself in nature. I have been a resident of New Mexico for 30 years. I appreciate the multicultural communities, the history and beauty of the land of enchantment. In NM I have studied permaculture, passive solar design and organic gardening. I am also a Master Naturalist. I've volunteered for many years at Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District's Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area. As a member of Friends of Whitfield, I assist with guiding students on field trips at Whitfield. I regularly help with public outreach and events. I have made extensive connections in conservation, building bridges and identifying new partnerships for the District. I have completed 2 years of college. My passion for Conservation, volunteer work, and prepared me to be a Board Supervisor.
  • I am active in meeting and communicating with other agencies and non profits across the state. I feel it is important for Board supervisors engage with the local community and elsewhere. It is important to educate the people about how they can improve their soils, conserve water and protect the environment for sustainability. I want to be transparent to the community and be available to discuss their needs, to improve their skills and knowledge in caring for their land.
  • Share information about extreme weather events. It needs to be addressed through education and demonstration. I would like to promote practical conservation practices such as raingardens, soil sponges, scales, berms, water basins, use cover crops to enrich the soil. And to use native plants with deep roots that help reduce soil erosion.
  • I feel that children need more education about recycling, conservation, and caring for the earth. They need more time outside playing in nature to connect with themselves. Growing up as a baby boomer we didn't have the technology and social media issues distracting us from nature. Studies have shown that play in nature heals. I hope to provide more accessibility to children in our community.
Serving the Community to educate about conservation, water usage, soil erosion, protecting our groundwater a natural resources.
I look up to the Native Americans and the native New Mexicans that have lived here for generations that have cared for the land. I also look up to Dolores Huerta for showing me that women are intelligent, courageous and have strength to stand up to unethical and harmful policies that harm women, farm workers and laborers. I have utmost respect for the land that we care for. I hope to share my respect and knowledge to others.
Engage with the Community, not just show up for board meetings. Be truthful and transparent to the public. Participant at events that are held at Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area. Spend time communicating with our
voters .
The core responsibilities are much of what I expressed above.
That I participated in making the Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District's a better, caring, resourceful and informative community.
President John F Kennedy was assassinated. I was 6 years old. I remember my mother crying. I didn't really understand the event.
My first job was babysitting two children for 40 hours a week. I got paid a whopping 50 cents an hour or 5 dollars a day. It was my first summer job. I was 13 years old. After that I was a bus girl for a Chinese restaurant. I was paid 1.65 an hour. I kept that job until I got a job at Jack in the box for 2.10 an hour.
Aldo Leopold biography. He was one of the first Naturalist in our area. He observed and appreciated how nature functions and to help protect the land.
Being kind and appreciative of my life's journey and acceptance of who I am.
I am proud of myself for doing the best I can do on a daily basis. I have created a life for my self that is adventurous and fulfilling. I am happiest when I am outside in the fresh air of New Mexico. I love to learn and understand how things work. I am in awe of the natural world every time I step into it. I am proud that I care about people and I try to help them out if I can. I support many non-profit organizations to make the world a better place for me, wildlife and the communities at large.
