Shaun is a fifth generation Idahoan who grew up in Melba and Caldwell and now lives in Kuna. Shaun is one of only a few people who can say they grew up on an island in Idaho, living for many years on Noble Island (aka Laughlin Island) on the Snake River between Melba and Murphy. After graduating from Caldwell High in 1994, Shaun attended the U of I studying agriculture, and later graduated from BSU in 2009 and 2010 with AAS and BAS degrees in Fire Science. Shaun has been married to his amazing wife, Erin (who works as a middle school teacher in Kuna), for 22 years and has two daughters: Hailey and Olivia. He is an avid woodworker and outdoorsman who enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, backpacking, and riding mules in the beautiful Idaho backcountry. Shaun began his career as a firefighter with Nampa Fire (NFD) in 2001 where he has worked for the past 20 years, starting as a probie, then driver, and currently as a Captain for NFD. During his career, he has been an advocate for the health and safety of first responders including police, career and volunteer firefighters, and emergency medical providers. Having successfully worked with the legislature on these health and safety issues, Shaun knows how to get things done in the Idaho statehouse. Shaun will now focus his time and energy on ensuring that Idaho will provide a top public education system for our kids, provide real tax relief for homeowners, and bolster our safety and security by supporting public safety.
  • Keeping the public safe is of paramount importance. Shaun started his public safety career as a volunteer firefighter in Moscow while going to college. Shaun worked side-by-side with law enforcement to serve and protect a community. Fast forward two decades, and that love of service to the community is as strong as ever. Shaun has served the Nampa Fire Department with distinction and has worked with the legislature to secure mental health protections for Idaho’s first responders. With an average suicide rate 6 times that of the general public, Shaun does not want to see one more first responder take his or her own life due to lack of mental health care. Shaun will continue to protect Idaho's citizens and Backs the Blue!
  • Shaun has deep roots in Idaho education and understands how important a good education is to everyday Idahoans. Students coming out of the public and private education systems in Idaho need to be prepared for the world. Over the last several years, we have seen how the world economy has the power to change local prices and even policies, and our children need to learn how to navigate this complex environment. Through a comprehensive K-12 education, our kids can learn how to operate within what has become a network of computers and people so that they can be successful and live the life they want to lead. Appropriately funding our public school system is essential to fulfill our obligation to Idaho children and families.
  • Many attempts have been made over the years to bring meaningful tax relief to Idaho families. Shaun believes that several of these attempts have been fruitful, but many have fallen short to truly help Idaho families save their hard-earned money. Property taxes have skyrocketed due to the increase in home values without any real relief in the taxes paid by homeowners. Shaun wants to provide real tax relief to Idaho homeowners by properly adjusting the homeowner’s exemption to an appropriate level.
I believe that honesty and integrity are the most important personal characteristics any person should have.
I have worked in government for the bulk of my career and had a unique opportunity to work with the Idaho legislature for the last decade as a legislative advisor for the Professional Firefighters of Idaho. I have developed good relationships with many council members, commissioners, and sitting Idaho Senators and Representatives. I have formed many good friendships with the same. I work well with the other legislative advisors, and they know me as a man of integrity. I believe these relationships will pay off in spades as I work for the citizens of District 23 in Idaho.
My first job outside of mowing lawns and volunteering at my church was for an animal feed company when I was about 13. I loaded bagged feed and mineral supplements weighing 50-60lbs each into customer cars and pickups. I also moved pallets of the bagged feed around the warehouse to organize as necessary and swept floors, cleaned bathrooms, and stocked retail shelves. I had the job for about a year when the company moved their retail location out of Caldwell. I worked hard for minimum wage, but it definitely kept me in shape and taught me the value of hard work.
Maybe a bit cheezy, but the Idaho Atlas and Gazatteer. I LOVE Idaho and her backcountry. I can stare at maps of rangelands, mountains, and roadless areas for hours at a time, plotting my next day trip or backpacking excursion. We are lucky to live in this state and have access to so many recreation choices so close-in to where we live.
Compromise is often looked at as the best solution to solve problems between people with differing views. In reality, compromise is when two parties or viewpoints each give a little in the direction of the "middle," but when the compromise is complete, neither has fully had their needs met. As a state representative, I hope to collaborate in order to find solutions to Idaho's problems. Collaborating is far superior to compromise because in some or even most cases, both parties will leave the table each with their needs met. Take the old example of the orange.

Two parties each want the whole orange. Compromise would be to cut the orange in half, each party receiving essentially half of what they wanted. But through a collaborative discussion, it is revealed that one party wants the orange for the rind, and the other for the pulp and juice. So a true collaboration occurs when each party received fully what they wanted from that orange.

I believe that there are many things in government that if time is taken to meet, discuss alternatives, and find collaborative solutions, great things can be done an all parties involved can get their needs met.
