Prior to 2011, O'Hara launched four bids for governor (in 1991, 1995, 1999 and 2003), in addition to running for Hattiesberg mayor and a seat in the United States House of Representatives.[5]

Eleven state executive offices in Mississippi were up for election in 2015. The general election was held on November 3, 2015, following a primary election on August 4, 2015. Runoffs were scheduled for August 25 in case no candidate received a majority (50 percent plus one) of the popular vote in a given primary race.
O'Hara faced incumbent Phil Bryant (R) and challenger Robert Gray (D) in the general election. O'Hara was defeated, and Bryant won re-election.[6][7]

O'Hara ran in the 2012 election for the U.S. Senate, representing Mississippi. He ran on the Reform Party ticket and faced incumbent Roger Wicker, Albert N. Gore and Thomas Cramer in the November 6 general election. Wicker won.[4]

Noteworthy events
Personhood initiative
At a gubernatorial candidate forum in late June 2011, O'Hara said he supported a "personhood" initiative for the November 8 ballot, saying that abortion was like giving “the middle finger to God.”[12]
Reform party candidate question
There was a question as to whether or not O'Hara was a Reform Party candidate. Two separate organizations claimed to represent the Reform Party of Mississippi. The Mississippi Secretary of State ultimately decided to allow O'Hara to run for treasurer on the Reform ticket.[13] The national Reform Party organization did not support O'Hara.[14]
