Three of the seven seats on the Wauwatosa School District school board were up for by district general election on April 5, 2016. Incumbent Michael Meier ran unopposed and won re-election to Seat 2, and newcomers Shawn Rolland and Emily Kenney ran unopposed and won Seats 1 and 3, respectively.[2][3]

2016

Rolland highlighted the following statement on his campaign website:

My name is Shawn Rolland, and I hope to earn your vote for Wauwatosa School Board in 2016.

Long story short: I want to protect and promote our kids’ Wauwatosa schools. As a father of three children who attend Wauwatosa public schools, I look at my children and their classmates, and I want the best for them, and all other Wauwatosa kids. I share the hopes, dreams, fears, passions of any other involved parent.

We live in an exceptional community with exceptional public schools. Ask any Wauwatosa parent and they’ll agree. Many of our Wauwatosa schools are ranked among the very best in America. We should be immensely proud of our kids, our parents, our schools and our community partners who all believe in our kids. We made this happen, together.

Decades of wise leadership have brought us to this moment – and we should applaud the Wauwatosa School Board leaders and others who have helped to mold our kids’ schools.

We should feel hopeful and confident about our kids’ futures – so long as leaders continue to choose to make our kids and our schools a priority.

This is the “Wauwatosa Way.”

Our Challenge

We live in exceptional times. Wauwatosa public schools are receiving less funding and flexibility from the state budget. As a result, Wauwatosa school budgets – budgets that fund our kids’ schools, programs and passions – are being pushed to the limit.

Providing them with the best schools requires future-focused strategic planning, savvy budgeting, and data-driven decision making.

Our Opportunity

As a school board member, I pledge to build on those successes and commit to the values of:

  1. Long-term strategic planning
  2. Savvy budgeting, and
  3. Data-driven decision making

I commit to strong communication. It’s more important than ever for our Wauwatosa school district to build long-term relationships with parents and join parents and the community in celebrating our kids’ and our schools’ successes.

And I commit to the phrase “see something, say something.” If you see waste, say something. If you see an opportunity, say something. Our schools will succeed if passionate parents, teachers, administrators and community members share ideas and their own positive visions.[6]
