I am a wife, a mother or two, and a grandmother of one. I have been a hairstylist for over twenty years and own Salon Extasy in Council Bluffs. I believe strongly in worker's rights, education, equality, healthcare, reproductive freedom, and climate activism.
  • I want to reinstate the collective bargaining rights of our public workers, including educators.
  • I want to work to start raising the minimum wage in Iowa for the first time in over a decade.
  • Education. Our students and schools should be a top priority. More funding needs to go to the classrooms.
I am passionate about worker's rights. A higher minimum wage. Giving our children the tools and supplies that they need in order to succeed. Giving our educators the tools, supplies, and support to help our students grow and learn to the best of their abilities. I believe that healthcare is a human right and will always support legislation to expand healthcare and prescription coverage. I believe that our planet is the only one that we have and it's our job to take the best care of it for future generations. I believe in the right to chose what to do with your own body, be it birth control, or abortion procedures. Those decisions should be between a patient and their doctor.
There are a lot of smart women that I look up to. If I have to pick one, it's Elizabeth Warren. She's never forgotten what it's like to not have the upper hand in life. She realizes that we don't all get breaks and that life doesn't give the same opportunities to everyone. She stands up for what is right, no matter what others think of her for it. She's intelligent. She's kind. She works hard and does her best to help others. Through all of that, she still has a sense of humor and can have fun. Not only do I agree with a lot of her policies, but I look up to her for who she is and how she treats others.
I think being a good listener is very important. Empathy to understand where people are at in their situations matters. Elected officials need to understand that the people they work for and represent have all sorts of lives and backgrounds. Every statistic number is a person. Every person has value. You should go into office believing that even the people that don't always agree with you have value, and you should try to understand their life and background to serve them the best that you can.
I truly care about people. I've said "people over profits" ever since I could remember. I really believe that people matter more than dollar signs. When you hold public office, your duty is to the people. I've been caring for people for my entire career, just in a different way. I know how to listen and how to really see the people that I'm working for as opposed to just seeing them as numbers.
Leslie Nope. She's smart. Empathetic. Cares about her community. She fights for what is right, but does it with kindness. She works hard, but makes sure to always find the fun in life.
I've heard many personal stories in my years behind the salon chair. One that comes to mind when it comes to this office is from a teacher. She's brilliant. I know, she taught both of my children and they absolutely loved her classes. She does a great job of keeping her students engaged and keeping them on their toes in the classroom. I can't recall how long she's been a teacher. What I do know, and what had a huge impact on me when it comes to policy, is that she won't make any more other than a cost of living increase. She can't ask for a raise for all of her hard work. No matter how many more classes she takes, or how much more education she gets, she has reached her pay cap. That's what happened in 2017 when teachers lost the right to bargain. I know she's not the only brilliant educator Iowa has that faces this same problem.

Another teacher from Nebraska told me that at her union meetings, they remind teachers that they don't want to lose their rights the way Iowa teachers have.
