Shawon Bernard
Shawon Bernard (Democratic Party) ran for election to the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to represent District 2. Bernard lost in the primary on October 12, 2019.
Bernard was a Democratic candidate for District 1 representative on the Orleans Parish School Board in Louisiana. The special election was held on October 24, 2015.[1] The top vote recipient in the election, John A. Brown Sr. (D), did not win a majority of the votes cast in the election, requiring a runoff election to be held on November 21, 2015. Bernard placed second in the special election but lost to Brown in the runoff.
Biography
Bernard is a lifelong resident of New Orleans, La. She graduated from Joseph S. Clark Sr. High School. She earned a B.S. and an M.Ed. from the University of New Orleans, an M.S. from Southern University at New Orleans and a J.D. from the Southern University Law Center. She has worked as a teacher, school administrator and education advocate.[2]

Louisiana elections use the majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50 percent of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.

2015
One of the seven seats on the Orleans Parish School Board was up for special election in 2015 due to the resignation of District 1 incumbent Ira Thomas following charges of bribery conspiracy. John A. Brown Sr. (D) was appointed to fill the vacancy until a special election could be held. He faced fellow Democrats Keith Barney and Shawon Bernard in the primary election on October 24, 2015.
Brown and Bernard advanced from the special election to a runoff on November 21, 2015, as no candidate received a majority of the votes cast. Brown won the runoff and the remainder of the unexpired term.[3]

2015
Returning public school governance to the Orleans Parish School Board from the Recovery School District was a central campaign theme for Bernard.[2] On the matter, she stated, "All public schools should be governed by the locally elected school board." She also highlighted neighborhood schools, saying, "Every student should attend the school closest to his/her home. An opted out option should be provided to parents for real choice," and, "Every school should provide high quality education to all studeents [sic]."[5]
