I'm Shay Dabney, a community advocate and dedicated Colorado Springs School District 11 alumna. I'm committed to ensuring equitable access to quality education for all students, irrespective of their backgrounds. My personal exposure to educational disparities while growing up in a military family fuels my passion for accessible learning. Thriving under inspiring educators at Mitchell High School, I aim to collaborate with community stakeholders to shape policies that remove barriers, making my exceptional educational experience available to all District 11 students. I have an unwavering commitment to education, serving on the District 11 Leadership Team for Neighbors for Education, Mitchell High School's School Accountability Committee (SAC), and as the Program and Operations Manager at Citizens Project, a local nonprofit promoting civic inclusivity. My vision as a Director on the Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education is to elevate the district to the forefront of Colorado's education landscape.
  • Opportunity for All. Colorado Springs School District 11, the city's oldest, serves a diverse student body. I believe that every student, regardless of abilities, deserves quality education and the resources to succeed. I view students as unique individuals, not just statistics, emphasizing the importance of analyzing individual circumstances behind data points to ensure their success. My commitment lies in providing tailored support for each student's educational journey.
  • Post-secondary Readiness. Reported by District 11 Administration and the Colorado Department of Education, D11 graduation rates lag behind the state at a staggering 11.4 percent. Our students lack the preparation needed for post-graduation life. These students will become our neighbors, co-workers, and community members, necessitating the skills to be productive citizens, regardless of their path—college, trade school, or straight into the workforce.
  • Parent and Educator Partnerships. Research underscores the positive impact of parental involvement on student outcomes. Through robust parental engagement and a collaborative partnership with educators, we can cultivate the desired success for our students. Caregivers serve as their children's strongest advocates, while educators play a pivotal role in their education. Together, we must ensure that students receive the necessary resources to thrive.
My passion for education, honed by my experiences growing up in a military family, extends to several key areas of public policy. My foremost commitment lies in promoting equitable access to quality education, regardless of a student's zip code or background. I envision policies that break down barriers and offer every District 11 student an exceptional education.

Moreover, I’m dedicated to issues of equity, justice, and inclusion. My background in political science from CSU-Pueblo has prepared me well to advocate for these principles. As a member of the District 11 Leadership Team for Neighbors for Education and the chair of Mitchell High School's School Accountability Committee, I have actively worked to enhance educational accountability and inclusivity.

Currently serving as the Program and Operations Manager of Citizens Project, a local nonprofit promoting community inclusivity, I am well-versed in community engagement. In my pursuit of a role on the Colorado Springs School District 11 Board of Education, I seek to make my beloved district the pinnacle of educational excellence in Colorado, with a strong focus on equitable policies that benefit all students.
