“ | Education
As a parent of five children in the public school system, a former volunteer in my home school system and a community activist I understand the most pressing needs of our public school system. I am truly concerned with the direction our public education system is moving. Many educators have shared their experiences in the classroom with me. We have taken innovation out of the classroom and now only teach our children test-taking skills. Our teachers have lost their autonomy to implement practical, effective education policies. We should be educating our children with modern technologies and practices. Our K-12 schools are vital to our kids’ growth and success; we must redirect the path we are on currently in which schools and kids suffer. I have fought to change our education system and support our teachers for many years. I have worked with PTAs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America, and interested members of my community to educate parents about their rights. I have lobbied our elected officials to sponsor legislation that would support our schools. I am endorsed by the Virginia Education Association because of my commitment to our children and their futures. Workforce Development Small businesses improve our economy, keep us diversified and move us forward as a Commonwealth. As a small business owner myself, I know how to create jobs. I started as the only employee of my business, growing the company to the point where it employs over 150 sub-contractors. I understand what it takes to create and maintain a diverse economy; Virginia’s economy is too reliant on only a few industries. I have partnered with other small businesses to create innovated programs to get people trained for our ever-changing, fast-paced job market. Getting people back to work is essential to growing our economy and providing stability for families. I believe in a realistic living wage and providing training for unskilled workers. As a small business owner, I have seen the challenges facing our economy. I also understand that Virginia has not increased the minimum wage in decades as inflation has gone up. Hard working people deserve the dignity of being able to provide for their families. No one working forty hours a week should live in poverty. Women's Rights I fully support the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA was passed by Congress in 1972 and sent to the states for ratification. Virginia still has not ratified this amendment. I also believe in equal pay for equal work. In Virginia, women earn eighty-three cents for each dollar that their male colleagues earn. Crafting legislation to ensure equal pay for women is common sense. I believe all medical decisions should be made by a woman and her doctor. Legislators do not belong in our doctors’ offices. Women have the right to choose what is best for their bodies and I will continue to support a woman’s right to make her own medical decisions. Seniors We must take better care of our seniors. Many seniors face terrible situations with abuse, fraud and a lack of adequate care. Providing access to proper healthcare is a key component to ensuring that our seniors can stay healthy and live with dignity. Fraud committed against seniors is growing at an alarming rate and costing us billions of dollars. I will fight to protect the rights of our seniors. I will fight to protect their healthcare and I will fight to support quality caretakers. Conservation and Environment Our district has many complexities related to these issues. Our Legislators need to understand the serious effects of climate change not only to the planet but to the Commonwealth. Our district has an agriculture area that depends on untainted natural resources. Other areas face serious pollution of the air and waterways. We must address these issues because our children deserve to live with clean water, fresh air, and adequate green space. Every day we are impacted by pollutants and chemicals in our water and food supply. All Virginians should know what goes into the foods they are eating. Consumer education is a right and a necessity. Companies should be required to properly label their products, because we should never take away any individual’s right to make an informed decision. Your Voice, Your Choice, Your Vote As I go door to door and talk to the people in the 62nd District, I have found that many of us face the similar, if not the same problems. The desire for change is overwhelming. Many of you have discussed issues and concerns with me and I understand these challenges. I have worked for many years to address different concerns within our community. I have advocated and fought for a better Virginia and I will continue this fight as your Legislator. Now is the time to have your voice heard. This November, you have a choice.[2][3] |
