Hi! I’m Shelbi Nunery-a teacher, mom of three Miamisburg students, and a proud advocate for public education. With a Master’s in Educational Leadership and years of classroom experience, I’ve seen firsthand what helps students thrive and where we can do better. As a parent of two children with IEPs, I bring both professional knowledge and lived experience to the table. I’m deeply rooted in this community and passionate about ensuring our schools support every learner, from preschool to graduation.
  • Every student deserves to be seen, supported, and challenged. I believe in creating learning environments where students of all abilities can reach their potential through strong relationships, adaptable instruction, and access to resources that meet individual needs.
  • Supporting teachers supports students. I will advocate for educators to have the tools, time, and trust they need to do their jobs well. When teachers feel valued and heard, classrooms become more stable, innovative, and effective.
  • Families deserve transparency and collaboration from their school board. I will prioritize open communication, community involvement, and decision-making that reflects what’s best for students ... not politics or personal agendas.
I’m passionate about policies that strengthen student support systems. Including special education, social-emotional learning, and mental health initiatives. I also care deeply about improving communication and trust between schools and families, ensuring decisions are clear, consistent, and student-centered. Additionally, I’m focused on responsible fiscal planning that keeps resources where they belong: in classrooms, supporting learning and safety.
An effective elected official understands how schools work and respects the boundaries of the board’s role. The focus should be on creating strong, student-centered policies within our scope while remaining fiscally responsible. Politics should never drive decisions...we serve all students, from every background. The common ground must always be our shared goal: helping every student leave our schools prepared, confident, and ready to succeed in the world.
The core responsibilities of a school board member are to set policies that support student learning, oversee the district’s finances responsibly, and hire and evaluate the superintendent. It’s also our job to listen to the community, maintain transparency, and ensure decisions align with state laws and district goals. Above all, the role is about governance-not management-and keeping students’ success at the center of every decision.
I want my legacy to be that I helped create a school district where every student feels supported, every teacher feels valued, and every family feels heard. I hope people remember me as someone who listened, led with integrity, and made thoughtful, data-informed decisions that improved outcomes for students. Most of all, I want to leave behind a culture of collaboration and respect that continues to move our schools forward.
My first job was working concessions at Traders World when I was 15. I can’t say I loved it, but it ended up teaching me valuable lessons. I quickly “rose in rank” among the other teen workers because I had a natural knack for leadership and delegation. Looking back, that experience showed me the importance of teamwork, communication, and responsibility, skills I still use every day as a teacher and leader.
The primary job of a school board member is to govern, not manage. That means setting policies, approving budgets, and ensuring accountability so students have the best opportunity to learn. It also involves working collaboratively with the superintendent, staying informed about district data and needs, and representing the community’s values while keeping politics out of the classroom. The focus should always remain on student success and responsible stewardship of resources.
I’d support the diverse needs of our district by listening, collaborating, and making data-informed decisions that put students first. Every student and staff member deserves to feel valued, supported, and equipped to succeed. I’ll work to ensure our schools remain inclusive, welcoming, and focused on helping every learner thrive.
I’ll protect classroom resources by pairing smart budgeting with transparent communication. Funding is largely set by state law and local taxes, so we have to maximize every dollar. I would:

Use multi year budgeting with regular audits to track trends in enrollment, staffing, and fixed costs

Review programs and positions with cost benefit and student impact data, keeping what works and sunsetting what does not

Expand grants and partnerships to support academics, career pathways, mental health, and safety upgrades

Pursue shared services and operational efficiencies that reduce overhead without touching the classroom

Advocate at the state level for fair funding and keep the community informed about levy needs with plain language reports

Bottom line, every spending decision should be tied to student outcomes and explained clearly to taxpayers.
My approach to school safety comes from living it every day as both a teacher and a parent. I spend my days in a classroom and send my own children to school, so safety is always on my mind. We need to continually evaluate and strengthen physical safety measures, like secure entrances and hurricane-proof windows, while ensuring existing protocols are consistently followed. A safe environment allows students and staff to focus on learning, not fear.
I’d prioritize increasing access to mental health resources and fostering a culture that normalizes seeking help. That means ensuring students and staff have consistent access to school counselors, psychologists, and wellness programs. I’d also support professional development for teachers to help them identify signs of stress or crisis early. When schools promote open communication, balance, and emotional safety, everyone can perform and feel their best.
I’d like to strengthen policies around bullying prevention and reporting. Our district needs clearer communication and more accessible tools for students and families to report bullying. There should be a consistent, transparent process that ensures every report is documented, investigated, and followed up on. Families should know exactly what steps to take and what to expect so no concern ever falls through the cracks. For prevention, I’d like to see stronger proactive measures, like regular social-emotional learning, peer mentoring programs, and staff training to recognize early warning signs of bullying. Building a positive school culture where empathy, inclusion, and accountability are emphasized can prevent many issues before they start. Prevention has to be just as strong as response.
My ideal learning environment is one where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to learn. Classrooms should encourage curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration. Students thrive when they have strong relationships with their teachers, access to needed resources, and opportunities to explore their interests while being held to high expectations.
I’d focus on building trust and communication with parents through transparency and accessibility. One priority would be evaluating the effectiveness of the current parent communication app to see if it truly meets families’ needs. If not, I’d explore more user-friendly and cost-effective options. I’d also like to see a bus tracking app implemented so parents can monitor routes and delays in real time. Strengthening these tools helps families stay informed and connected to their child’s school experience.
Artificial intelligence should be used to enhance learning, not replace it. It can help teachers personalize instruction and free up time for meaningful interaction with students. We also need classes on digital literacy so students learn how to use AI responsibly, because it isn’t going away. Policies that ban AI will only push students to find workarounds. Instead, we should lean into the changing landscape of technology and prepare students to use it ethically and effectively.
I’m most proud of earning my associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees while working full time and raising three children. My path wasn’t traditional, but it taught me perseverance, time management, and the value of hard work. With the support of my family and a strong sense of purpose, I proved that dedication and determination can make any goal achievable.
