Four seats on the Shelby County Schools school board in Tennessee were up for general election on August 2, 2018. Michelle Robinson McKissack defeated incumbent Chris Caldwell, Katherine Ayers, and Michael Scruggs to win the District 1 seat. Incumbent Shante Avant defeated Roderic Ford, Percy Markell Hunter, and Minnie Hunter to win re-election to the District 6 seat. Incumbent William Orgel defeated Jerry Cunningham and won re-election to the District 8 seat. Joyce Dorse-Coleman defeated incumbent Mike Kernell, Kori Hamner, Rhonnie Brewer, and Alvin Crook and won the District 9 seat.[3]

Shelby County Schools is located in Tennessee. The district was the largest school district in the state in the 2014–2015 school year and served 115,810 students.[4]

In 2016, Donald Trump (R) won 77 out of 99 state House districts in Tennessee with an average margin of victory of 43.8 points. Trump won four districts controlled by Democrats heading into the 2018 elections.
