Sheldon Harris
Sheldon Harris was a judge of the Illinois 1st District Appellate Court. He assumed office in 2010. He left office in 2022.
Harris (Democratic Party) ran for election for the 1st District judge of the Illinois Supreme Court. He lost in the Democratic primary on March 17, 2020.
Harris was a judge on the First District Appellate Court in Illinois. He was first appointed to the court in November 2010.[1] He was reassigned from the second to the third division on February 1, 2013, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge John O. Steele.[2] His was re-elected in 2014 after running unopposed for a term that expired on December 1, 2024.[3]
On November 11, 2013, the Supreme Court of Illinois extended Harris' duty to the Circuit Court of Cook County from December 1, 2013, through December 1, 2014.[4]
Judge Sheldon Harris announced he planned to retire in December 2022.[5]
Education
Harris received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona at Tucson in 1963 and his J.D. from John Marshall Law School in 1966.[1]
Career
After teaching in the Chicago Public Schools, Harris began his law career in 1966 as a trial lawyer for the Legal Aid Bureau of Chicago. He then started his own law practice in 1970, first specializing in divorce and domestic relations cases and then moving to a trial law practice in personal injury, medical malpractice, and corporate disputes. He spent three years as a principal of Haas and Harris, Ltd and then over 25 years at Sheldon A. Harris & Associates. Harris was appointed to the Circuit Court of Cook County in February of 2000. In November 2010, he was appointed to the Illinois First District Appellate Court.[1][6]

Harris ran for election to the First District Appellate Court.
Primary: He was successful in the Democratic primary on March 18, 2014, receiving 37.4 percent of the vote. He competed against Susan Kennedy Sullivan and Freddrenna M. Lyle.
General: He was unopposed in the general election on November 4, 2014.[7][8][9][10]
Evaluations
The Illinois State Bar Association rated Harris as Qualified for election in 2014.[11]
