We all deserve a chance to live a life free of crime, social inequality and to expect social justice for all people and communities. One of the ways gentrification can be socially divisive is that it can split up families and neighborhoods. Yet, it can also be beneficial inasmuch as it will force the different groups to come together in order to survive. Gentrification will force the “us-them” thinking of these diverse groups to have to change to an “us-we” mindset. Like it or not, we are ONE district. If we are to survive this moment then we, all of us have to become unified. My plan is to bring community unity to District C. How will this be possible?
I propose to reestablish the overarching district group that will be known as “The New Southeast Raleigh Assembly.” I envision longtime residents joining with new District C residents to discuss how we can improve our district. This collective body will also include groups already active in the district such as Justice Served NC and other grassroot organizations; the district churches such as Lost Sheep Outreach Ministry, Macedonia New Life Church that hosts the expungement clinic, and the other religious institutions; the New Bern Avenue Corridor Assembly; the District C CACs; small business owners whose input will assist with economic develop in the district; representatives from Shaw University, St. Augustine’s University, and the Vernon Malone College and Career Academy to assist in the educational development for District C children; the Chief of Police and the Raleigh Police Department in develop a working, viable relationship with the community; and connecting with Garner now that the Amazon Distribution Center will be located between our district and their municipality.
