Born and raised in Merrimac, WI. I grew up a child of public service. I have dedicated the last 19 years to public service as Administrator/Clerk/Treasurer in both Sauk and Dane Counties.

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in ILS, minor Public Administration, UW Green Bay, summa cum laude; Wisconsin Certified Municipal Clerk Job: Administrator/Clerk/Treasurer, Village of Black Earth Previous to Public Service: 13 years with Shopper Stoppers/Madison Newspapers as Sales & Advertising Manager. Volunteer: Senior Fitness Exercise Instructor, Village of Black Earth in partnership with North West Dane Senior Services Served on Black Earth Creek Green Infrastructure Steering Committee; mentor for Wisconsin Municipal Clerk’s

  • Prioritizing Rural Wisconsin. I know the unique issues and challenges our local communities face. I will fight for our family farms, small businesses and local governments wo they can continue to help our area thrive.
  • Reducing the tax burden. Inflation is out of control and Wisconsinites are feeling the squeeze. I'll fight to continue reducing tax burden on our families and businesses.
  • Fighting waste, fraud and abuse. My experience in local government will help cut through bureaucracy and red tape, streamlining government and ensure your tax dollars are spent wisely. I will make sure hard working Wisconsinites are given a hand up, not a hand out.
Increasing community policing and violence prevention is one of many areas that could be improved. It is no secret; policing is a difficult job. Recruiting and retaining good officers is key in reducing violence. The increase in gun violence requires giving our police resources they need to help keep us protected. That would include resources such as a mental health partner to deal with unstable situations that go beyond what an officer is trained to do. We need to start looking at the causes of gun violence and the people behind the gun, not the gun itself. Mental health awareness and resources.

Finding resources for local governments. Local governments are under a levy limit, which is great for keeping taxes down however; there has been little to no change in State Shared Revenues for local governments in a decade. This is a critical source of revenue that helps our communities keep taxes down. The current state of inflation will make it very difficult to keep taxes down and provide resources our residents want and deserve at affordable prices if the state doesn’t look at some adjustment.
My father is my greatest influence. While he is now gone from us, his dedication to the people of Wisconsin far exceeded his family in many times. My father, Alan Shanks, was Sauk County Sheriff for 12 years, served as Sauk Prairie School Board President, Village President in Merrimac for 29 years, Merrimac Fire Chief for over 25 years before he would serve as Head of Emergency Government for the State of Wisconsin. I grew up a child of public service through him. I didn't expect to follow in his path and could never accomplish what he has however, I am committed, dedicated and extremely passionate to help everyone the best I can. He taught that in all his children.
I have been in local government for the past 19 years serving as Administrator/Clerk/Treasurer. I have had to remain apolitical due to the nature of the business. This makes me a great candidate who knows how to work with all parties, research all sides, offer solutions and solve problems to help the communities I have served. I have reduced budgets, ran over 60 elections, mentor newer Administrators and Clerks and so much more.

I have a level head and can stay calm in many situations.
Legacy to leave, a better world for what I was able to provide others.
The Barneveld tornado, June of 1984. I was 14 years old. My dad was Sauk County Sheriff at the time and was asked by the Governor to oversee Emergency Management for the event due to his extensive experience. His Sauk County helicopter pilot was on his way to pick up my father in Merrimac to go when it crashed near our family business.
I started out working for the family business "Shanks Shanty" when I was 13. It was an ice cream stand by the Merrimac Ferry my grandfather built. My father and his sibling ran it as kids, then my cousins and finally our family. I was there until I married in 1990.
"Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. It's a memoir of a Psychiatrist life in Nazi death camps and is lessons for spiritual survival. It is a great reminder that we can't avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it and move forward. Inspiring.
Acceptance as a woman in a man's world. It is no secret women have struggled to obtain acknowledgement for being able to do the same work as any man. It is very difficult to have the same title, job skills and better education in government industry and not be able to be paid the same or be acknowledged the way men are for their work.
