Sherdea Nosakhare was a 2014 candidate for District 6 of the Oakland, California City Council.

Campaign themes

2014

On her campaign website, Nosakhare highlighted the following issues:[1]

Public safety

  • Excerpt: "District Six residents need to be able to trust that police will come when we call them and treat us respectfully when they do. Not only do we need more cops on the beat, we must start building stronger working relationships between police and the communities they serve [...] I’ll oppose the continued militarization of our police, protect the rights of peaceful protesters, keep our police force diverse and representative, and ensure our City’s policy of no racial profiling continues.

Jobs and employment

  • Excerpt: "East Oakland is littered with vacant, blighted property. We must fill these wasted spaces with thriving small businesses. I will work to create a clear path for local businesses and restaurants to renovate run-down buildings and provide good, high paying jobs for residents."

Education

  • Excerpt: "The Oakland School District (OUSD) is at risk of losing preschool seats in its Child Development Center programs because it’s not filled to capacity. Meanwhile, the City's Head Start program has a waiting list. Both serve similar populations yet the two don't communicate. I want to bridge that gap. I will be a fierce advocate of the OUSD and its initiative to get all kids reading at grade level by 3rd grade."
