Sherman's campaign website explained his concerns heading into the election:[7]

"Despite the fact Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama, the Birmingham Board of Education has not provided the highest quality of educational opportunity for every student in the Birmingham City Schools system. The high school graduation rate is a mere 55% much lower than the State's average. Most of the elementary schools did not meet AYP and to be exact 59% DID NOT MEET it. The achievement gap is unacceptable when comparing Birmingham City Schools with other schools systems within the State. The average ACT score for BCS high school seniors is an 18. Most major Colleges and Universities require a minimum score of 20 for acceptance. Too many schools and students are being left behind. Our curriculum and approach has to be innovative, current, one that will prepare all of our students for college and a career."[8]
