She was a Democratic candidate for District 33 of the Maine State Senate in 2010, where she was defeated in the general election.

Leighton ran in the 2012 election for Maine State Senate District 28. Leighton ran unopposed in the Democratic primary on June 12, 2012, and was defeated by Andre Cushing (R) in the general election on November 6, 2012.[1]
