Hello, my name is Sherman McFarland. I am a Postdoctoral Fellow working remotely for the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. I volunteer with the Cat Annex at the Yolo County Animal Shelter, with Davis Community Meals, and with Best Buddies. I graduated from Gettysburg College in 2015, and from the UC-Davis School of Law in 2020. I am 30 years old.
  • I am running to fight climate change. California should eliminate subsidies to oil and gas companies and transfer those subsidies to alternative energy companies. In particular, we should focus our investments on wind and solar power. In addition, I support a significant reduction of oil and gas drilling in California.
  • I am running to reduce gun violence. Firearm injuries were the leading cause of death of young people aged 1 to 19 in 2020 and 2021. Even though California has the strongest gun control laws in the country, we should continue to keep children and communities safe by extending the waiting period for firearms, establishing a statewide firearm buyback program, and maintaining support for restrictions on the concealed carry of firearms in locations identified as "sensitive places."
  • I would sponsor legislation that creates a public option health insurance plan and single-payer health care in California. Every Californian deserves access to lower-cost, quality health care.

An elected official should try to make the world a better place in which to live for those who are suffering or less fortunate than the average person. It is also important to be determined to fight for issues that people care about.
