Sheryl Halle Lipman is the chief judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee. She joined the court in 2014 after a nomination from President Barack Obama. She has served as chief judge since January 20, 2023.[1]
Biography
Early life and education
A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Lipman earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1984 and her J.D. from the New York University School of Law in 1987.[2]

On August 1, 2013, President Barack Obama nominated Lipman to a seat on the United States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee vacated by Jon McCalla. The American Bar Association rated Lipman Majority Well Qualified, Minority Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Lipman's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on November 13, 2013. Under provisions of Rule XXXI, paragraph six of the standing rules of the Senate, Lipman's nomination was returned to the president. President Obama resubmitted Lipman's nomination on January 6, 2014, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on January 16, 2014, without additional hearings. Lipman was confirmed on a recorded 95-0 vote of the U.S. Senate on April 30, 2014, and she received her commission on May 1, 2014.[2][3][4][5] In 2023, Lipman became chief judge of the district court.[6]
