Kanga highlighted the following issues on his campaign website:
“ | Support our Teachers
My mother was a school teacher, and I have seen up close the love and effort our teachers put into educating our children. One of the reasons I am running for School Board Trustee is to make sure we can retain our wonderful teachers and attract the best talent to our Schools. The Daily Journal article on July 31, 2017 mentioned that the non-profit HEART, was working with the county and the school district to provide pre-development funds for affordable housing for teachers. Collaborate with Businesses With the talent and resources that our innovative Bay Area companies have, we should have more corporate sponsors and work with their giving funds. If elected, I will work with our Education Foundation, our Superintendent, and PTA Council to build corporate partnerships. We have examples in our school district including:
Fundraising for Schools Since it was founded in 1992, the Education Foundation has contributed over $3 million to our School District. Over the years it has funded 5th grade instrumental music program, K-8 classroom music, GATE program support, Elementary School Counseling Center, and middle school after-school sports. The President, Colleen Sullivan and Board members, diligently work together on their fundraisers that raise much-needed funds for all the schools in our district. With a reduction in donations, Education Foundation currently only supports 5th grade music and middle school after-school athletics. If elected, I hope to work with them creatively in achieving some of their fundraising goals. Fiscal Responsibility: However, if the pizza is small, no matter how many ways you slice it, the slices will be small. We can't overlook the importance of fundraising in our budget. From a young age, I had to work on a tight budget, helping my dad with billing, accounting, and customer service for our family businesses. For the past 14 years, I have successfully managed my real estate business for my Buyers, Sellers and Investor clients. I have the skills necessary to review and manage our SMFC school district budget. Getting the message out Communication is key in not only our business relationships but also in our personal ones. With so many relatively inexpensive ways of communicating, I hope to work with our Superintendent, Communications Director and the School Board to give regular updates to parents and our community. When our community is engaged, and better informed through regular updates, we can get more support, better understanding and we can stand united. Positive Outlook Bayside Academy, a new school in San Mateo that will be K - 8. Bayside Academy consists of a K-5 STEAM program that moved from Parkside and the 6-8 STEM program which was Bayside STEM Academy. As per this article from SM Daily Journal, there is already a waiting list for this school. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math program. According to Feeding America, 1 in 6 kids faces hunger in USA. For the 13 million kids who do not get enough food, summer holidays is a time when they don't get their school lunches. Our School District serves free lunches during summer to eligible students, at College Park Elementary, LEAD Elementary and Sunnybrae Elementary Schools.[7] |
