Shirley Christian
Shirley Christian was a judge for the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas in Mahoning County, Ohio. She was appointed to the court by Governor John Kasich on August 27, 2014, to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge James C. Evans, who retired from the court on October 1, 2014.[1] Christian assumed office on October 2, 2014, and will need to run for election to the court in November 2016 to serve a full six-year term. Her final term expired on January 1, 2017.[2]
Christian ran for re-election on November 8, 2016, but was defeated.[3]

Selection method

The 391 judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are all selected in an identical manner. Qualified individuals wishing to join the bench must participate in partisan primary elections followed by nonpartisan general elections.[4]
The chief judges of the Ohio Courts of Common Pleas are chosen by peer vote and serve for one year.[4]
Qualifications
To serve on an appellate or general jurisdiction court, a judge must be:[4]
- a district or county resident (for court of appeals and common pleas judges);
- at least six years practiced in law; and
- under the age of 70.
Under the Ohio Constitution, a judge who reaches 70 years of age may be assigned by the chief justice to active duty, receiving payment on a per-day basis in addition to whatever retirement benefits he or she is entitled to.
Education
Christian received her undergraduate and master's in education from Edinboro University and her J.D. degree from Ohio Northern University.[2]
Career
Before her appointment to the court, Christian practiced law with the firm of Harrington, Hoppe & Mitchell Ltd. in Salem, Ohio.[2][5]
