Judge halts NYC "Taxi of Tomorrow" plan
Judge Hagler, on October 8, 2013, struck down the city's plan to require most yellow cabs to be of the same model, a Nissan NV200. He ruled the "Taxi of Tomorrow" program, championed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC), violated the separation of powers doctrine.
The program would have required most new taxis purchased to be Nissan's NV200 model, as of October 28, 2013. The Nissan model won the "Taxi of Tomorrow" competition sponsored by the TLC, and the winner received a 10-year contract with Nissan estimated to be worth $1 billion.[2]
Judge Hagler explained in his decision:
“ | Simply stated, the power to contract and compel medallion owners to purchase the Nissan NV200 from Nissan for ten years does not exist in the City Charter.[3][4] | ” |
The city planned to appeal the decision[5]
