Shon Byrum (Democratic Party) ran for election to the Indiana House of Representatives to represent District 33. Byrum lost in the general election on November 6, 2018.

Byrum was a 2014 Democratic candidate for District 33 of the Indiana House of Representatives.

Campaign themes

2014

Byrum's website emphasized the following campaign themes:[1]

1. JOBS We have to be responsible and accountable to all of our people and continue to encourage job growth in East Central Indiana. The very best economic development investment is in our workforce. I would enlist a group of volunteers from different backgrounds and vocations to help better understand the real needs and the barriers that are in the way of job creation and help get East Central Indiana back to work.

2. INFRASTRUCTURE Local communities know the needs of the people best. They know that in order to get people to work, attract jobs, and economic development, communities should have the resources they need to function. Police departments, fire departments, schools all depend on local governments to work together for the common good we all share in. I will work tirelessly to connect these entities together and fight for their needs at the Statehouse.

3. EDUCATION As a Highly-Effective teacher, I know the challenges schools, teachers, and families face with our current educational policies. I would continue to advocate for high academic standards for both teachers and students, but at the same time, while we ask more, we listen more. 52% of teachers who are within their first 10 years of teaching are quitting nation-wide. We need to ask ourselves why. I would promote the value of teaching not only as role models, but also as ushers to our upcoming generation of Hoosier workers.

4. AGRICULTURE I grew up on a farm and was taught to always give back what we take from the Earth. Whether that was spending the first weekend after planting season cleaning up roadsides, or dredging the creek that ran through our farm, we knew there was a balance. Indiana should be extremely proud that it is a leader in agriculture. We must take great care, then, to model best agricultural practices. The next step in Indiana’s Agricultural leadership is Agri-Science and Agri-Ethics.[2]
